Designing for Community Impact: The New CHCO.tv

CHCO TV and The Courier Online News and Local Paper

When I was approached to design and develop the new website for CHCO-TV, I knew right away this project would be something special. As someone who is passionate about community, communication, and good design, it felt like the perfect match—pairing local storytelling with modern functionality. The result is a clean, responsive website that serves both CHCO Television and The Saint Croix Courier, making local news and programming more accessible than ever before.

A Modern Platform for a Trusted Local Voice

CHCO-TV is an independent community television station based in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, and it’s one of the last remaining locally owned and operated TV stations in Canada. Alongside CHCO operates The Saint Croix Courier, a longstanding newspaper serving Charlotte County and the surrounding region since 1865. Both platforms are vital for local journalism and community connection—and now they share a fresh, user-friendly online home. The goal for the website redesign was to reflect CHCO’s trusted presence in the region while making it easier for viewers and readers to:

  • Watch local news and original CHCO programs online
  • Read the latest headlines from The Courier
  • Access archives, community notices, and public interest stories
  • Discover how to get involved, submit content, or advertise

My Approach to the Website Design

When developing CHCO.tv, I focused on:

  • Simplicity & Speed: The layout is clean and uncluttered, with intuitive navigation so users can quickly find what they need—whether it’s tuning in to the latest council meeting or catching up on community events.
  • Mobile Responsiveness: The website is fully responsive, adapting to smartphones, tablets, and desktops for easy access on the go.
  • Integration & Automation: Video content is embedded seamlessly, and news articles from The Courier are updated dynamically for fresh, timely content.
  • SEO Optimization: From metadata to image compression and alt tags, every detail is designed to help CHCO and The Courier rank higher in search results.

Supporting Local Journalism Through Smart Web Design

As a web designer in St. Andrews, NB, I’m proud to support local media through meaningful design. A well-built website isn’t just pretty—it’s a tool to strengthen connection, reach new audiences, and keep the community informed. Working with CHCO and The Courier gave me the chance to highlight their incredible work and amplify it online. From their award-winning coverage to community advocacy, they are the heartbeat of local media in Charlotte County—and they deserve a platform that reflects that.
